Brian Jonah, Ph.D.
Brian Jonah is an independent road safety consultant working in Ottawa. He retired from the Road Safety Directorate of Transport Canada in November 2008 where he had been the Director, Road Safety Programs responsible for collision data collection and analysis, including collision investigations, road user and road infrastructure research, the development of road safety related policy and programs, and communication with the public. Prior to that, he was Director of Motor Vehicle Standards and Research where he was responsible for vehicle and human factor research and the development of new vehicle regulations for vehicles sold in Canada.
After receiving a doctorate in social psychology from the University of Western Ontario, Brian worked over the following 31 years on road safety research, vehicle safety regulation, and policy and program evaluation, with particular emphasis on impaired driving, seat belt use, risky driving and young drivers. As the chair of the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators' (CCMTA) Road Safety Vision Task Force from 2003-2008 and the Road Safety Research and Policies Standing Committee from 2007-2008, he led, in collaboration with his provincial colleagues and other stakeholders, Canada's current national road safety program called Road Safety Vision 2010.
Following his retirement from Transport Canada, he worked for a year at the Traffic Injury Research Foundation as a senior research scientist conducting research on heavy truck safety, graduated driver licensing, and the characteristics of fatal collisions involving high risk drivers occurring in the I-95 Corridor Coalition states in the U.S.
Brian has published over 40 papers in refereed journals, numerous papers in conference proceedings, and has given many presentations to a variety of audiences including the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the Transportation Research Board, the International Conference on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety, and the Governors' Highway Safety Association.
He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals and the Transportation Research Board's Occupant Protection Committee and he is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention. He has also been providing assistance to developing countries on road safety.
